In this video, we'll be travelling across northern Austria, from west to east in a very rare 6 axle electric locomotive from 1960, known as the ΓBB class 1110. We start in Bludenz, an alpine town located at the meeting point of 5 valleys in the Vorarlberg which, borders with Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany. For the first part of our journey we'll take the Arlberg railway to Innsbruck, the second highest standard gauge railway in Austria, after the Brenner. Completed in 1884 with gradients of up to 3.1%, it proved to be very challenging to operate. Not only were there traction difficulties; avalanches, rockfalls, landslides and floods all posed serious challenges. Over the years, avalanche galleries, tunnels and diversions have been built to overcome some of these dangers. These have all been labelled with their respective year of completion during the video. Former routes are also shown. The numbers that appear at the top right indicate the highest gradient in the section between two stations in permille (a tenth of a percent). More tunnels are in planning for the Arlberg railway, so we have to enjoy the views while we can! We then take the lower Inn valley railway to WΓΆrgl, which serves as the north - south connection from Germany to Italy via the Brenner railway. From WΓΆrgl, we'll take the "Salzburg - Tyrol" railway to Salzburg, also known as the Giselabahn, named after the Archduchess Gisela of Austria, the second daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I. With its tight curves and gradients of up to 2.6%, it's not suited for express trains, which predominantly take the shortcut through Germany via Rosenheim. From Salzburg we'll take the old Westbahn line towards Vienna, which we have partly seen in the opposite direction in a previous video (Vienna - Passau: https://youtu.be/ryljxrT37qw). The speeds displayed indicate the highest allowable speed until a new speed is displayed. I hope you enjoyed the video. If you'd like to donate, please click the following link.
